Available as an e-book or as a softcover trade paperback, "Self-Publishing Fiction - From Manuscript to Bookstore and Beyond," gives you all the tools you need to produce and sell your own novel, short story collection or other work of fiction.
This book is a "hands-on" manual which will lead you in detail through the processes of designing, printing, distributing and promoting your book. You will learn how to get your books into bookstores and how to move them off the shelves. Along the way, you will also learn how to exploit non-traditional (i.e. non-bookstore) sales. And you'll learn how to get the best value for every dollar you spend on producing and marketing your book. You'll find extensive lists of printers, reviewers, bookstores, booksellers' associations and more, complete with physical and email addresses, phone and fax numbers, contact names and, where appropriate, recommendations based on experience.
You'll learn how to copyright your book, obtain ISBNs and Library of Congress numbers, get the best prices from printers and work with them to achieve the results you want, how to approach reviewers, how to give your book the best chance of obtaining effective distribution to bookstores, whom to approach at Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc. to arrange book signings and other events, how to design a website and accept orders over the internet …. in short a complete guide of how to go from manuscript to bookstore and beyond.

Why Self-Publish Your Fiction? There has never been a better time to self-publish your novel. Almost all the pre-print work can be done on a personal computer, as can the management of the project. With the aid of this book you can identify the best printing companies for a new publisher who would welcome some patient handling, but is not a complete idiot anxious to be overcharged for unnecessary services. Internet bookstores like Amazon.com make it easier to stick your toe in the waters of the bookselling world. There are obstacles in the area of marketing for a new, single title publisher, but these can be overcome with patience and knowledge. Best of all, you are in control. You are not dependent on the good graces of a publisher. You can succeed or fail on your own terms.

In my preparations for launching my novel, I was helped by several good books on self-publishing. However, these were all written with the non-fiction writer in mind. The strategies which work for non-fiction are often very different from those which make sense for writers of novels and other forms of fiction, particularly in the areas of distribution and promotion. Non-fiction writers often market books to a more specialized audience (local history enthusiasts, railroad fans, lawyers). These are easier to reach through targeted channels such as magazines, internet newsgroups etc. The price of books can also often be higher. A fiction writer will sell some books directly to readers, but our success depends more on getting our books, priced at $12.95 into bookstores and moving them off the shelves. This book will describe in detail how to go about this task.

Avoid the Traps This book will show you how to do true self-publishing. Don't confuse this with working with print-on-demand publishers, such as Iuniverse and Xlibris. As a true self-publisher, you will have complete control of your own book and how it is marketed. Your margin per book will be much greater. Most importantly, you have a greater chance of being taken seriously by reviewers and bookstores, who recognize these imprints and regard them with suspicion. Read an extract from the book regarding print-on-demand publishers.
